Highlights of the Region.
SUN & BEACHES
After ca. 30 minutes you'll reach one of the many Mediterranean beaches. The gently shelving beaches are particullarly popular with families. However, the beaches are not only great in the summer season but also during the colder months when they invite you for walks along their shores, collecting sea shells or enjoying seafood in one of the many restaurants directly by the beach.
CANAL DU MIDI
The « Canal du Midi » invites you to use one of the many bike paths along its canal banks. Or do you prefer to enjoy the beautiful landscape aboard one of the boats ?
RÉSERVE AFRICAINE
The « Réserve Africaine » is located in Sigean about 30km southeast of Ornaisons offering a memorable safari adventure for the entire family. In an African like steppe landscape more than 3800 wild animals are romping around on ca. 300 hectares.
NARBONNE
Driving east for ca. 15 minutes you'll reach the ancient Roman city of Narbonne. Its gothic cathedral towering over its historic center with the many small alleys and inviting restaurants.
CARCASSONE
About 40 minutes West of Ornaisons you'll reach Carcasonne with its World Heritage Site “Cité”. From Easter until the end of October Carcassone offers a wide range of concerts and other events. The annual fireworks on July 14th – the French national holiday – is definitely worth a visit.
ABBAYE DE FONTFROIDE
Directly accross the Maison Gecko you can take the road leading you to the former Cistercian abbey « Fontfroide » in a 15 minute drive. You can visit the abbey during a guided tour or visit on your own with the help of a tablet PC. The beautiful rosary and the herb garten are also worth a visit. They offer concerts and exhibitions almost all year round. In the summer months their sound and light show « Nocturne Son & Lumière » are not to be missed.
